Ras Beirut, Beirut, LB
Kyriakos Tofitzikis

Ras Beirut (meaning “the tip of Beirut”) is an upscale residential neighborhood of Beirut. The area is a promontory in the western part of the old city centre, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Inhabited by mixed populations of Christians, Muslims, Druze and secular individuals, the area provides a number of international schools and universities, including the American University of Beirut and the International College Beirut. After the evolution of the American Univeristy into a prominent private institution of higher education, the neighborhood densified and developed into one of Beirut’s most modern and cosmopolitan districts. Back in the mid-1800s, the area was mainly suburban, full of flat roofed houses surrounded by garden fields and unpaved paths lined with prickly pears. However, in the 20th century, a transition occured to the neighborhood’s character. From a rural and agricultural landscape, Ras Beirut became a densely developed and unplanned urban center, being under a constant upgrading process.
